Why Barcelona will dominate the Champions League this season?

  1. One of the best defences in Europe:

The Catalan club have been a strong force in Europe from a long time. They have been difficult to beat but with Real Madrid’s recent success in the Champions League, the power has shifted in Spain. It is time Barcelona strongly challenge to become the Champions of Europe and they have the players to exactly do that. With Gerard Pique and Samuel Umtiti in the heart of the defence, Barcelona have a strong partnership at the back. Jordi Alba has always been good and threatening while going forward and the same can be said for Sergi Roberto. New signing Lenglet from Sevilla only strengthens their backline and in case the defence fails, goalkeeper Marc Andre Ter Stegen has developed incredibly well to minimize the chances of conceding.

  1. Balanced squad:

Ernseto Valverde has a strong squad with him and it has quite a depth to challenge for all the trophies this upcoming season. Also, the squad has some great young players in the form of Malcolm, Ousmane Dembele and Philippe Coutinho, Samuel Umtiti, Arthur Melo and some excellent experienced players like Sergio Busquets, Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez, Gerard Pique etc. It is this brilliant balance that gives Valverde a lot of options on the pitch and which will come immensely handy in a tournament like the Champions League.

  1. The rise of Philippe Coutinho:

There was a reason why Barcelona shed a massive amount of money to bring Coutinho from Liverpool in the January transfer window. The Brazilian playmaker is a superb athlete, very dangerous while going forward. His skills on the ball, his ability to dribble past players and scoring outrageously stunning long range goals make him a very special player. With both Suarez and Messi ageing, the onus will be on Coutinho to step up more than often. Also, Iniesta’s absence in the midfield brings a lot of responsibility on Coutinho’s shoulders. He will be a big player for Barcelona this upcoming season and certainly a very important figure in the Champions League.

  1. Smart signings in the summer:

Barcelona struggled last season more because they didn’t have much variety to come off the bench. This season Valverde has already strengthened his squad by adding the likes of Clement Lenglet in defence. Midfield Arthur Melo is also brought in to bring more depth to the midfield and for a more attacking option, Barcelona have signed Malcolm from Bordeaux. All these signings give Valverde to implement different tactics which will come very useful in the Champions League.
