Longer holiday at Arsenal

Arsene Wenger has been under fire recently from fans as he announced that key players would be given a longer holiday period to recover from the Euro 2016 competition. Already fans are climbing on Wenger’s back saying that players should be fit and match ready come the start of the season and not playing catch up before the first whistle is even blown. Ramsey, Ozil, Giroud and Koscielny have all be given extra time off to recover. When questioned recently by the media on his decision to let players rest longer and potentially jeopardise the start of the season, Wenger had images (2)this to say “You consider the rest time because France had a long, long go and I believe that they need four weeks’ holiday because they need to recover from that.”It takes you two or three weeks to regenerate… to recover completely, and they need to come back with hunger. That disappointment to lose a final, it takes some time to recover from that. I believe the club benefits from experiences at the top level, and the mental experiences as well that they have gone through with such a huge pressure. Of course, in the longer term you benefit from that.”

Arsenal kicks off their pre-season preparations as they take on Lens on July 22nd before they head of to the States for two matches against San Jose Earthquakes and LA Galaxy. The also face Manchester City in Sweden before they start their league campaign where they take on Liverpool in their opening fixture. This is Wenger’s last contractual season as manager and expectations will be high for delivering the League title that has eluded him for so long, much to the despair and anguish of the fans year in year out. Wenger is also under pressure to sign an outright striker, and if Arsenal is to be serious contenders this season it’s an area that needs desperate attention!
