5) Karim Benzema
The Frenchman is currently going through a rut, wherein with each passing game, his position is under severe threat at the club. Despite what would likely be his last season in Spain, Benzema has been a huge success at Real Madrid. He has been a quintessential figure in the 3 champions league titles Real have won in recent years. In addition to his fine work rate and selfless style of play, Benzema has always been amongst the goals. He has so far scored 53 goals in 99 games in the competition for both Real and Lyon.
4) Rudd Van Nistelrooy
Two time Dutch player of the year, Nistelrooy was quite a force back in his heyday. Indeed, Nistelrooy’s predatory instincts made him one of the fiercest strikers in world football. He featured in the Champions league in 73 games for the likes of United, PSV and Real Madrid, though failed to get his hands on the trophy ever. Nevertheless, he did manage to score 56 goals, which is an excellent return. He retired in 2012 after a glittering career, which saw him lead the goal scoring charts in the Champions league on three occasions.
3) Raul Gonzalez
The Real Madrid legend was a huge fan favourite back in his career. Despite his tiny figure, Raul was one of the best strikers on the planet with his instinctive skills. He played for Schalke and Real Madrid in his career, scoring 71 goals in 142 games in the Champions league. The Spaniard won 3 champions league titles in his career, all with Real Madrid, and was also the leading goal scorer in ’99 and ’00 season. A true legend of the game, Raul is also Real’s record appearance maker and was also their leading goal scorer before a certain Ronaldo signed for Los Blancos.
2) Lionel Messi
Arguably the best player the football world has ever seen, there is hardly any records list which goes without Messi’s name on it. Such has been the nature of Argentine’s success in his career. Regularly scoring and creating magic for the Catalans, it has become impossible to imagine a Barcelona without their little star. Messi has won 4 Champions league titles, which is also a testament to Barca’s success in the last decade or so. Five-time Ballon D’Or winner Messi has scored a massive 97 goals in Europe’s premier club competition.
1) Cristiano Ronaldo
There is an argument on why Messi is the greatest player ever thanks to Cristiano Ronaldo’s presence. Everything Messi does, Ronaldo matches up to it or maybe even surpasses him sometimes, such has been the level of competition between the two. Often the El Clasico becomes Messivs Ronaldo. The five-time Ballon D’Or Portuguese legend has scored 116 goals in the Champions league, an astonishing figure he has achieved playing for the likes of Manchester United and Real Madrid. Now in the twilight of his career, Ronaldo is having his worst season in front of goal for reigning La Liga champions; however, the same is not true in the Champions league, wherein just last week, he scored a brace as Real defeated PSG.
