Footballers who turned down a move to Chelsea in 2017 transfer window:

5. Ross Barkley

The Everton midfielder was looking unwanted at the Merseyside club and it was almost certain that he would make a move away from the club. It was on the deadline day that a move to Chelsea was happening for the Englishman. Some report suggested that Barkley walked halfway into the medical but it was later clarified that Barkley wanted to decide about his future when he was fully fit and therefore rejected the move for the time being.

4. Alex Oxlade Chamberlain

Chelsea needed a wingback to have more options and strengthen their squad. Alex Oxlade Chamberlain was touted to move to Chelsea but things went south after he had a talk with Antonio Conte. The reason being he wanted to play as a central midfielder and Conte saw him as a wing back. So he decided to reject the London club and joined Liverpool where surprisingly he will have a lot of competition to get regular game time at the club.

3. Alex Sandro

Chelsea desperately wanted to sign the Brazilian fullback/wingback from Juventus. Antonio Conte was hell bent to add Sandro to the squad as they made a stunning bid of €80 million. Juventus on receiving the bid consulted Sandro as to what his wishes were and given that both Dani Alves and Leonardo Bonucci had left the club this summer transfer window, Sandro opted to stay at Juve and therefore rejected Chelsea which left Antonio Conte with a lot of disappointment.

2. Virgil Van Djik

The Dutch defender was one of the most wanted defenders in the Premier League this window. He was expected to join Liverpool but when Liverpool were made to publicly apologize for the tapping up the Southampton defender, Chelsea swooped in and were negotiating with Southampton for a fee. However, Van Djik didn’t want to move to Stamford Bridge as he only had his eyes set on joining Liverpool and rejected a move to Chelsea. Even after handing in a transfer request, Southampton stayed strong on their stance and refused to sell him at any cost.

1. Romelu Lukaku

The Belgian had become a big hit in the Premier League with his superb form in front of the goal. It was almost inevitable that he was going to move away from Everton. It was rumored that he was keen on rejoining Chelsea especially with the board members of Chelsea showing so much interest for the move but it all changed when Lukaku talked with Jose Mourinho. Paul Pogba was instrumental in making this move happen as Lukaku decided to join Manchester United and rejected Chelsea. The London club ended with signing Alvaro Morata from Real Madrid.
